Welcome To Kenya

Things To Know

  • Highlights – Safari, Maasai Villages, Sheldrick Elephant Orphanage, Giraffe Centre.
  • Language – English, Swahili
  • Currency – Kenyan Shilling (KES)
  • Power Outlets – Kenya uses power plug, and socket type G.  The standard voltage is 240 V, with a standard frequency of 50 Hz.  I always travel with a universal adapter to ensure I can keep all my devices and batteries fully charged.
  • Safety – Kenya is a generally safe country to visit. Be alert for petty theft in the cities.
  • Water Safety – Drink only bottled water, which is readily available. Avoid drinking from the tap. I travel with a LARQ purifying water bottle to be safe.
  • Transportation – Uber is available in Nairobi but gets increasingly harder to find the farther you travel outside the city.

Best Time To Go

The best time to visit Kenya is during the dry season, which consists of the months of JuneOctober, and January to February. June through October, the game is easier to spot and there are fewer mosquitos. The wildebeest can be seen in vast numbers starting in July until they migrate back to Tanzania in October. Since this considered is the high season, many of the parks will be crowded and the prices will be at their highest.

Spring in Kenya is the low season. During the months of March, April, and May, many lodges and camps shut down due to the rains. However, if you are willing to roll the dice with the weather, the Maasai Mara can be visited year-round. This is the time to find less crowded parks and lower rates.
